Staging environment
A copy of a website or system where changes are tried out before real users see them.
Glossary · Maintenance & technical quality
A staging environment is as close a copy of the live system as possible, with its own data. A change can be deployed there, tested and shown to the client without putting the real system at risk.
Without one, every change is tried for the first time on real users and real orders. While a system is small that may seem acceptable; once sales depend on it, a single mistake costs more than keeping the environment.
A staging environment is useful only when it resembles the real one: the same software version, similar data, the same integrations in test mode. Otherwise it shows that a change works there, not that it will work once released.
